Petting Dogs

Ask the human who’s at the end of the leash, “Is it OK if I pet your dog?”

If they say yes, go ahead and pet the dog gently.

If they say no, it’s OK to feel disappointed.  But maybe the dog or the human is tired, maybe the dog has a little stomach ache and needs to go home.

Mostly when my human say no it’s because I’m thirsty.  I need my water so the kids have to pet me another time.

Sometimes when a human says no it’s because the dog isn’t nice to children.  My friend Roslyn doesn’t like to be petted by small children.  She’s not used to children.  She never really met any until she was thirteen years old.  We don’t think Roslyn would be mean or bite, but we want to be careful.

If you are very young, ask your mom, dad or the adult taking care of you if it’s OK to pet the dog.  If your adult says yes, then ask the dog’s human,

“Is it OK if I pet your dog?”
